Canada’s Conservative government is arguing that same-sex couples who have married in Canada are not legally wed.
Same-sex marriage was effectively legalized in Canada in 2004, and passed into law a year later. Since then, more than 15,000 same-sex marriages have taken place, with more than 5,000 involving couples from outside Canada.
The government is now contending that non-Canadian same-sex couples who have been married here are only considered married if gay marriage is also recognized in their home country or state.
